Ford Transit Recall: Foldaway Seat Cushion May Not Lock Under Load

National Van Builders is recalling 2015-2018 Ford Transit vans with specific foldaway seats that may not stay locked during a crash or sudden stop.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (seating system failure) that increases the risk of injury in a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

National Van Builders, Inc. is recalling certain 2015-2018 Ford Transit vehicles equipped with Freedman GO-ES Foldaway Seats (part numbers 43705, 45467, 48923, and 75719). The recall involves 475 vehicles.

The defect occurs when the back seat cushion is rotated from the stowed position to the upright position. In this configuration, the seat cushion may not remain locked into place when under load, such as in a crash or a sudden stop. This condition causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 207, "Seating Systems."

In the event of a crash, if the seat back moves, the seat occupant has an increased risk of injury. National Van will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and repair the foldaway seat free of charge. The recall began on November 26, 2018. Owners may contact National Van customer service at 1-508-222-2272 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
