Mitsubishi Recalls Vehicles Due to Drive Belt Tensioner Flange Crack Risk
Mitsubishi is recalling specific 2008-2012 models because a cracked drive belt tensioner flange may cause the belt to detach, leading to engine stalling and increased crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (cracked tensioner flange) that can cause the engine to stall, explicitly increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects and significant injury risk.
Plain-English summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2009-2012 Lancer, 2008-2012 Outlander, 2010-2012 Lancer Sportback, and 2011-2012 Outlander Sport vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with either a 4B11 or 4B12 engine. The recall involves approximately 141,053 vehicles.
The defect involves the drive belt automatic tensioner flange, which may crack. If this flange cracks, it allows the accessory drive belt to detach. If the drive belt detaches, the battery will discharge and the engine will stall, which increases the risk of a crash.
MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the belt tensioner with one that has an improved shape, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 27, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-001. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
