Mitsubishi is recalling 2008-2011 Lancer, Lancer Evolution, and Outlander models because the engine drive belt may detach, causing the engine to stall and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (engine belt detachment) that can cause an engine stall and increase the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Lancer, Lancer Evolution, and Outlander; 2009-2011 Lancer Sportback, Lancer Ralliart, and Lancer Sportback Ralliart; and 2011 Outlander Sport vehicles. The affected vehicles were manufactured with 4B1 engines that use a specific pulley and belt arrangement to turn the alternator, cooling fan, and power steering pump. These pulleys may experience unusual wear, which can allow the drive belt to detach.
If the drive belt detaches, the battery may discharge, resulting in an engine stall. This loss of power increases the risk of a crash. The recall covers approximately 165,923 vehicles in the United States.
Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the drive belt with a rubber belt. Drive pulleys that are excessively worn will also be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 15, 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
