BMW Recalls 2013-2015 7 Series Vehicles for Incorrect Taillights

BMW is recalling certain 2013-2015 7 Series and ActiveHybrid 7 vehicles because incorrect left rear taillight assemblies may reduce visibility to other drivers.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a defect that increases the risk of a crash due to reduced vehicle conspicuity, fitting the rubric criterion for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2013-2015 740i, 740Li, 740Lxi, 750i, 750xi, 750Li, 750Lxi, and 2014 ActiveHybrid 7 vehicles. The recall addresses vehicles that may have received incorrect replacement left rear taillight assemblies, causing them to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108 regarding lamps and reflective devices.

Vehicles with these incorrect lamp assemblies may be less conspicuous to other drivers, which could increase the risk of a crash. The recall began on August 11, 2017.

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace any incorrect left rear taillight assemblies free of charge. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
