What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where seats may separate during a crash, increasing the risk of injury to occupants, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.

Plain-English summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2016 IC Bus RE school buses manufactured between January 25, 2016, and March 31, 2016. These vehicles are equipped with Freedman-brand passenger seats with integrated child seats (ICS). The recall addresses a defect where these seats may separate from the base frame due to bolt failure, causing the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 222, "School Bus Passenger Seating and Crash Protection."

In the event of a crash, the separation of the seat from the base frame increases the risk of injury to the seat occupant. Navistar has already completed the repair work on the affected vehicles free of charge to owners. Consequently, owner notifications will not be sent.

Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-331-332-1590 for more information. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.safercar.gov.
