What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a brake system defect that increases the risk of a crash, which fits the rubric criterion for 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.'
Plain-English summary
Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 LEAF vehicles manufactured between November 19, 2012, and July 31, 2015. The recall involves 46,859 vehicles.
During very cold temperatures, the relay inside the electronic brake booster may freeze. If this occurs, the driver must exert more effort to slow the vehicle down, and longer distances or additional brake effort would be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Intelligent Brake Control Unit software, free of charge. The recall began on March 28, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
