Navistar Recalls School Buses with Defective Wheelchair Lifts
Navistar is recalling certain 2007-2015 IC school buses equipped with specific Ricon wheelchair lifts. The lifts may have oversized pivot holes that allow bearings to shift, risking platform failure.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in a vehicle component (wheelchair lift) that could cause the platform to fall, posing a significant injury risk to the operator.
Plain-English summary
Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2007-2015 IC BE and CE school buses, 2007-2011 IC FE school buses, and 2007-2014 IC RE school buses. These vehicles are equipped with certain model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510 wheelchair lifts manufactured by Ricon. The recall affects 4,784 vehicles.
The affected wheelchair lifts are equipped with folding link arms that may have pivot holes that are too big. This defect allows the bearings to move out of position. If the bearings move out of position, the stowed platform may have excessive movement, resulting in the failure of the platform mounting. This failure could cause the wheelchair lift platform to fall out of the vehicle when the doors are opened, increasing the risk of injury for the lift operator.
Navistar will notify the purchasers of the lifts, and dealers will inspect the link arms for damage or for displaced bearings. The platform will also be inspected for cracks. Any damaged parts will be replaced free of charge. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Note that these buses and wheelchair lifts were subject to a similar recall in 2014, and all vehicles that received that recall remedy are still affected by this recall.
