Strick Dry Freight Van Trailer Recall for Rear Impact Guard Defect

Strick Trailers is recalling 1998-2005 Dry Freight Van Trailers because rear impact guards may fail to prevent vehicles from sliding underneath during a crash.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (rear impact guards) that increases the risk of injury to drivers of other vehicles in a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Strick Trailers, LLC is recalling certain model year 1998-2005 Dry Freight Van Trailers manufactured between April 19, 1998, and January 17, 2005. The recall affects trailers equipped with rear impact guards that use gussets 46829 and 46830.

The rear impact guards on these trailers may not be strong enough to prevent a vehicle from traveling under the trailer in the event of a crash. This defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 223, "Rear Impact Guards."

Owners should contact Strick customer service at 1-704-436-2590 to schedule a repair. Service centers will install reinforcements to the rear impact guards free of charge. The recall began on January 13, 2016. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
