Trans Tech School Buses Recalled for Wheelchair Lift Bearing Defect

Transportation Collaborative is recalling 188 Trans Tech school buses equipped with certain Ricon wheelchair lifts. Defective pivot holes may allow bearings to shift, causing the lift platform to fall and injure operators.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (wheelchair lift platform failure) that could cause the platform to fall, posing a significant risk of injury to the lift operator.

Plain-English summary

Transportation Collaborative, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2006-2015 Trans Tech Student Safety Transporter, ST Aero, and Roadster school buses. The recall also includes model year 2012-2015 Trans Tech Roadstar buses. These vehicles were manufactured between January 1, 2006, and April 21, 2014, and are equipped with specific Ricon model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, or S5510 wheelchair lifts.

The affected wheelchair lifts are equipped with folding link arms that may have pivot holes that are too big. This defect allows the bearings to move out of position. If the bearings shift, the stowed platform may have excessive movement, resulting in the failure of the platform mounting. This failure could cause the wheelchair lift platform to fall out of the vehicle when the doors are opened, increasing the risk of injury for the lift operator.

Owners should contact Transportation Collaborative customer service at 1-845-988-0419 or Ricon customer service at 1-800-322-2884. Transportation Collaborative will notify owners, who will then inspect the link arms for damage or displaced bearings and the platform for cracks. Any damaged parts will be replaced free of charge. The recall began on December 17, 2015. Note that vehicles that received a similar recall remedy in 2014 are still affected by this current recall.
