GM Recalls 2007-2008 Trucks for Passenger Air Bag Inflator Defect
General Motors is recalling 2007-2008 Chevrolet and GMC trucks because the passenger air bag inflator may rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious injury.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that the defect could result in 'serious injury or death' due to metal fragments striking occupants, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural vehicle defects involving serious harm.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD trucks, as well as GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD trucks. The affected vehicles were manufactured between November 27, 2006, and August 29, 2008. The recall involves approximately 330,198 vehicles.
The defect involves the passenger side frontal air bag inflator, which may be susceptible to moisture intrusion. Over time, this moisture could cause the inflator to rupture when the air bag deploys. In the event of a crash requiring deployment, the rupturing inflator could release metal fragments that strike vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator free of charge. The recall began on July 27, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's recall numbers are 15438 and 15817. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
