BMW Recalls 2014-2015 Models Due to Head Air Bag Inflator Defect

BMW is recalling specific 2014-2015 2, 3, and 4 Series vehicles because the head air bag inflator may fail, posing an injury risk during a crash.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (air bag inflator rupture) that can cause sharp metal fragments to enter the vehicle, posing a significant injury risk.

Plain-English summary

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2014 4 Series Coupe, 2014 3 Series Sedan, and 2014-2015 2 Series Coupe vehicles. The affected models include the 428i, 428i xDrive, 435i, 435i xDrive, 320i, 320i xDrive, 328i, 328i xDrive, 335i, 335i xDrive, 228i, 228i xDrive, M235i, and M235i xDrive.

The recall is due to a defect where the head air bag inflator may fail at the weld joint. This failure can cause gas to leak from the inflator or result in an inflator rupture. An inflator that ruptures may cause sharp metal fragments to enter or exit the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, an inflator that leaks gas may only partially inflate during a crash, which also increases the risk of injury.

Dealers will replace the head air bags free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on February 12, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 for more information.
