BMW Recalls 2014-2015 Models for Head Air Bag Inflator Defect

BMW is recalling 2014-2015 2, 3, and 4 Series vehicles because head air bag inflators may fail, posing an injury risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (air bag inflator rupture) that can cause sharp metal fragments to enter the vehicle, posing a significant injury risk.

Plain-English summary

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2014-2015 2 Series Coupe, 3 Series Sedan, 4 Series Coupe, and 4 Series Gran Coupe vehicles. The recall involves 5,761 vehicles, including models such as the 228i, 328i, 335i, 328d, 428i, 435i, M3, M4, and M235i.

The defect involves the head air bag inflator, which may fail at the weld joint. This failure can cause gas to leak from the inflator or result in an inflator rupture. An inflator that ruptures may cause sharp metal fragments to enter or exit the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, an inflator that leaks gas may only partially inflate during a crash, also increasing the risk of injury.

Dealers will replace the head air bags free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 4, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
