Audi Recalls 2013-2015 Models Due to Air Bag Deployment Software Defect

Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 2013-2015 Audi A4, S4, and Allroad vehicles because a software error may prevent front air bags from deploying in a secondary impact.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (air bag deployment failure) that increases the risk of occupant injury, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Audi A4, S4, and Allroad vehicles. The recall covers vehicles manufactured between February 16, 2012, and October 21, 2014. The defect involves an improper algorithm in the air bag control module. If a crash necessitates the deployment of side air bags, a second impact to the front of the vehicle may not command the front air bags to also deploy.

If the front air bags do not deploy in the event of a secondary impact to the front of the vehicle, there is an increased risk of occupant injury. The recall began on November 14, 2014. Volkswagen will notify owners, and Audi dealers will update the air bag control unit software free of charge.
