Chrysler Recalls 2008 Vehicles for Ignition Switch Sticking Defect
Chrysler is recalling 2008 Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum, Jeep Commander, and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles because the ignition key may stick, potentially causing the engine to turn off while driving.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the ignition switch can fail, causing the engine to shut off and disabling critical safety systems like airbags and power steering, which significantly increases the risk of crash and injury.
Plain-English summary
Chrysler Group LLC is recalling certain model year 2008 Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, Dodge Charger, Jeep Commander, and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles. The recall covers vehicles manufactured between March 21, 2007, and May 12, 2008, depending on the specific model. In these vehicles, the ignition key (FOBIK) may not return to the "ON" position after being rotated to the "START" position, instead sticking between the two positions.
If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the "OFF" or "ACCESSORY" position while the vehicle is being driven, the engine will turn off. This action depowers key safety systems, including air bags, power steering, and power braking. The loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of a crash or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch and key FOBs free of charge. The recall began on August 19, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
