Chrysler Recalls Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commander for Ignition Switch Defect

Chrysler is recalling 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles because the ignition key may be accidentally knocked out of the run position, turning off the engine and safety systems.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the engine can shut off, disabling critical safety systems like airbags and power steering, which significantly increases the risk of injury in a crash.

Plain-English summary

Chrysler Group LLC is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured between February 11, 2004, and July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured between January 31, 2005, and July 5, 2007. The recall involves approximately 649,353 vehicles.

In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position. If the ignition key moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, depowering key safety systems including airbags, power steering, and power braking. This loss of functionality may increase the risk of a crash or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch free of charge. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Until the repair is performed, drivers are advised to adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key and to remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
