GM Recalls 2010-2014 Chevrolet Camaro for Ignition Key Defect

General Motors is recalling 2010-2014 Chevrolet Camaros because the ignition key may be accidentally knocked out of the run position by the driver's knee, potentially disabling airbags and power steering.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the ignition key can be knocked out of position, causing loss of power steering, braking, and airbag deployment, which significantly increases the risk of a crash and injury.

Plain-English summary

General Motors LLC is recalling 464,712 2010-2014 Chevrolet Camaro vehicles manufactured between December 3, 2008, and May 23, 2014. The recall addresses a defect in the electrical system where the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position and turning off the engine.

If the key is not in the run position, the vehicle's air bags may not deploy in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, the key being knocked out of position could cause a loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, which increases the risk of a vehicle crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will remove the key blade from the original flip key/RKE transmitter assemblies and provide two new keys and two key rings per key. The recall began on August 25, 2014. Until the repair is completed, drivers are advised to adjust their seat and steering column to allow clearance between their knee and the ignition key. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
