GM Recalls Cadillac CTS and SRX for Ignition Switch Defect
General Motors is recalling 554,328 Cadillac CTS and SRX vehicles because the ignition switch may move out of the run position, potentially preventing airbags from deploying.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (ignition switch) that can prevent airbag deployment, increasing the risk of injury in a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury reports or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling 554,328 model year 2003-2014 Cadillac CTS vehicles and 2004-2006 Cadillac SRX vehicles. The recall addresses a defect in the ignition switch where the weight of items on the key ring, road conditions, or other jarring events may cause the switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
If the ignition switch is not in the run position, the airbags may not deploy in the event of a crash, which increases the risk of injury. Until the recall is performed, customers are advised to remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key, and to remove any key fob from the key ring.
Dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys free of charge. The recall began on September 15, 2014. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
