GM Recalls 2015 SUVs for Unreinforced Roof Rail Air Bags
General Motors is recalling 2015 Chevrolet and GMC SUVs because roof rail air bags may be punctured by roof carrier hardware, increasing injury risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (unreinforced air bags) that increases the risk of occupant injury in a crash, but the source text does not report any specific injuries or fatalities, aligning with the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2015 Chevrolet Suburban, Suburban LTZ, Tahoe, Tahoe LTZ, GMC Yukon, and Yukon XL Denali vehicles. These vehicles were manufactured on May 13, 2014, and were assembled with roof rail air bags (RRAB) that were not reinforced at the points where the bags contact the hardware used to attach the roof carrier.
During deployment, the roof rail air bags may be punctured or torn by the roof carrier hardware. This defect reduces the air bag's performance and increases the risk of occupant injury in the event of a crash.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the roof carrier attaching hardware free of charge. The recall was expected to begin in early September 2014. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet) or 1-800-462-8782 (GMC), or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
