Plain-English summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2007 and 2009 Outlander vehicles. The recall addresses a defect in the transfer case assembly, specifically an oil seal that may come out of position during servicing.
If the oil seal dislodges, automatic transmission fluid (ATF) may enter the transfer case assembly. This reduces ATF pressure in the transmission, which can result in poor shifting or the inability to drive the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the transfer assembly as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on July 30, 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
