Plain-English summary
Spartan Motors, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Spartan Gladiator emergency vehicles manufactured between October 10, 2007, and May 11, 2011. These vehicles are equipped with a Cummins ISM engine and an engine cooling fan. The recall covers 480 affected units.
The defect involves excessive vibration of the engine cooling fan, which can result in the fan shattering while spinning. If the fan shatters while the vehicle's cab is raised, a person in the vicinity of the engine could be struck by the fan pieces and injured.
Spartan Chassis will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine cooling fan with a more robust one at no charge. The recall began on March 28, 2014. Customers can contact Spartan at 1-517-543-6400 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
