Plain-English summary
Spartan Chassis, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2007 through 2009 Spartan Gladiator fire apparatus Class 8 vehicles. These vehicles were manufactured between August 21, 2007, and March 8, 2010, and are equipped with Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines.
The recall addresses a defect where the engine may shut down unexpectedly when a diesel particulate filter over-temperature condition is detected. This unexpected shutdown of an emergency vehicle under certain conditions could hamper rescue operations and place the public at risk.
Spartan will notify owners, and Detroit Diesel will repair the vehicles free of charge by reprogramming the engine control logic. The repair ensures that a malfunction indicator light illuminates without requesting an engine shutdown. The safety recall began on May 19, 2010. Owners may contact Daimler Trucks at 1-800-547-0712 or Spartan Chassis at 1-800-543-4277 (Option 1) for more information.
