Ford and Chrysler Recall Vehicles with Defective Bosch Air Bag Modules
Ford and Chrysler are recalling vehicles with specific Bosch air bag modules where improper coating may prevent air bags and seat belt pretensioners from deploying in a crash.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where safety systems (air bags and pretensioners) may fail to deploy, significantly increasing the risk of injury to occupants in a crash.
Plain-English summary
Ford and Chrysler are recalling various vehicles equipped with original equipment Restraint Control Modules (RCM) AB10+ manufactured by Robert Bosch LLC between February 1, 2012, and August 27, 2013. The recall addresses a defect in the conformal coating of the circuit boards within these modules, which may not have been cured properly. This issue could induce shorting in the circuits.
If the circuits short, the frontal air bags, side curtain air bags, and seat belt pretensioners may fail to deploy in a crash where their deployment is necessary. This failure increases the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. The affected vehicle manufacturers have initiated safety recall campaigns 14V597 (Ford) and 14V643 (Chrysler) to address this defect.
Owners of affected vehicles should contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relation Center at 1-866-436-7332 or Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 for information regarding the repair. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
