What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake fluid loss and steering damage) that increases the risk of a crash, but the source text does not report any deaths or serious injuries, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Harley-Davidson Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2014 Trike motorcycles manufactured between July 24, 2013, and September 2, 2013. The recall involves 436 vehicles.
The defect is caused by an incorrectly machined part that may allow an excessive steering angle. This can cause the inner fairing to contact the rear brake fluid reservoir, leading to a loss of brake fluid. Additionally, the steering damper may be damaged. Loss of brake fluid reduces brake performance, and steering damper damage can reduce the rider's ability to control the motorcycle. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.
Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the trikes and replace the fork stem bracket, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on December 2, 2013. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson at 1-800-258-2464 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
