Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain 2004-2005 and 2007-2009 model year Sienna vehicles. The affected vehicles were manufactured between January 10, 2003, and August 10, 2005, for the 2004-2005 models, and between February 20, 2007, and December 12, 2008, for the 2007-2009 models. The recall involves a defect in the shift lock solenoid within the automatic transmission.
Due to this problem, the shift lever could be moved out of the Park position without the driver depressing the brake pedal. If this occurs, the transmission may engage a drive gear or Neutral, which increases the risk of a backover or roll-away crash.
Toyota will mail interim notifications to owners beginning in late October 2013. When parts become available, owners will receive a second notice, and dealers will replace the shift lock solenoid free of charge.
