Elkhart Coach Shuttle Bus Recall for Wheelchair Lift Fire Risk

Elkhart Coach is recalling 2006-2012 shuttle buses because a wheelchair lift cable may cause a short circuit and fire.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a potential fire hazard caused by a short circuit, which aligns with the rubric criterion for significant injury or property damage reports (Score 4).

Plain-English summary

Elkhart Coach is recalling certain model year 2006-2012 Elkhart coach model shuttle buses manufactured between November 2006 and July 2012. The affected vehicles are equipped with a Ricon-manufactured wheelchair lift that may have an optional armored pendant cable.

The armored cable may be positioned such that it does not clear the wheelchair lift. If the cable contacts the power lug and lacks a nonconductive cover or has an improperly installed cover, a short circuit may occur that could result in a fire.

Elkhart will notify owners and direct them to contact Ricon. Ricon will provide a supplemental cover kit with instructions free of charge. Owners may contact Elkhart at 1-574-264-5179 ext. 113 or Ricon at 1-818-267-3000. The recall began in August 2013.
