Elkhart Coach is recalling certain model year 2011 transit buses, specifically models 9215-0200 and 9250-0700, that are equipped with ProLo bus roof escape hatches. The recall addresses a defect where increased friction between the rear plate assemblies may cause the opening force of the hatches to exceed Federal standard requirements. As a result, these hatches fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 217, which governs bus emergency exits and window retention and release.
In the event of an emergency, a noncompliant hatch may not provide a means of readily accessible egress, which increases the risk of injury to the vehicle occupants. Elkhart Coach will notify owners, and the buses will be repaired free of charge. The safety recall began during July 2012.
