Ameritrans E-Series Buses Recalled for Wheelchair Lift Fire Risk

TMC Group is recalling 2006-2013 Ameritrans E-Series buses because a wheelchair lift cable may cause a short circuit and fire.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a potential fire hazard resulting from a short circuit, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural vehicle defects involving fire risk.

Plain-English summary

TMC Group, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2006-2013 Ameritrans E-Series buses manufactured between August 1, 2006, and July 31, 2012. These vehicles are equipped with a Ricon wheelchair lift featuring an optional armored pendant cable.

The armored cable may be positioned in a way that it does not clear the wheelchair lift. If the cable contacts the power lug and lacks a proper nonconductive cover, a short circuit may occur, potentially resulting in a fire.

Ricon will send owners a supplemental cover kit and instructions free of charge. A notice was mailed to owners via certified mail on July 5, 2013. Owners may contact Ricon Customer Service at 1-800-322-2884 or by email at [email protected].
