Ameritrans Shuttle Buses Recalled for Incorrect Tire and Loading Placards

Ameritrans is recalling 2012-2016 shuttle buses because incorrect tire and loading placards may confuse operators and lead to vehicle overloading.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the defect (incorrect placards) may lead to overloading and increased crash risk, but no injuries or fatalities have been reported in the source text.

Plain-English summary

Ameritrans Bus, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012-2016 shuttle buses manufactured between August 1, 2012, and June 24, 2016. The affected vehicles are built on Ford E-350, E-450, and F-550 chassis, Dodge 5500 chassis, and Freightliner M2 chassis. A total of 803 vehicles are included in this recall.

These vehicles may be equipped with Tire and Loading Placards that are not applicable to vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds. As a result, the vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims." The use of these incorrect labels may confuse the operator and result in overloading the vehicle, which increases the risk of a crash.

Ameritrans will notify owners, and dealers will remove the incorrect Tire and Loading Placards free of charge. The recall began on September 2, 2016. Owners may contact Ameritrans Customer Service at 1-574-218-4786 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
