Ameritrans Recalls Wheelchair Lifts with Potential Bearing Failure

Ameritrans is recalling 2012-2014 buses with Ricon wheelchair lifts where oversized pivot holes may allow bearings to shift, risking platform failure.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in a wheelchair lift that could cause the platform to fall, posing a risk of injury to the operator, but no injuries or fatalities have been reported in the source text.

Plain-English summary

Ameritrans Bus, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 CTV, 225, 200, 245, 285, 375, and 395 vehicles manufactured between August 1, 2012, and July 10, 2014. These vehicles are equipped with specific Ricon Corporation wheelchair lifts (models S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510) that have folding link arms with pivot holes that may be too large.

The oversized pivot holes may allow the bearings to move out of position. If this occurs, the stowed platform may have excessive movement, resulting in the failure of the platform mounting. This failure could cause the wheelchair lift platform to fall out of the vehicle when the doors are opened, increasing the risk of injury for the lift operator.

Ameritrans will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the link arms for damage or displaced bearings and inspect the platform for cracks. Any damaged parts will be replaced free of charge. The recall began on January 21, 2016. Owners may contact Ameritrans customer service at 1-574-262-8935 or Ricon customer service at 1-800-322-2884.
