Ameritrans 285 Shuttle Buses Recalled for Inaccurate Weight Rating Labels

Ameritrans is recalling 2012-2016 285 shuttle buses because certification labels may list an inaccurate gross vehicle weight rating, potentially affecting vehicle handling.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the defect (inaccurate GVWR) could adversely affect handling and increase crash risk, but no injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Plain-English summary

Ameritrans Bus, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012-2016 285 shuttle buses built on Ford E-450 chassis. These vehicles were manufactured between August 1, 2012, and May 13, 2016. The recall involves 225 vehicles.

The certification labels on these buses may display an inaccurate gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), causing the vehicles to fail compliance with 49 CFR Part 567, "Certification." If the GVWR is unknowingly exceeded, vehicle handling may be adversely affected, which increases the risk of a crash.

Ameritrans will notify owners, and dealers will remove and/or reposition bus seats as necessary and install corrected labels free of charge. The recall began on July 18, 2016. Owners may contact Ameritrans customer service at 1-574-262-8935 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
