What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural component failure that increases the risk of a crash, which fits the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Polaris Industries, Inc. is recalling certain Lock & Ride accessory passenger backrests, part numbers 2877938 (chrome) and 2877938-266 (black), intended for use on Cross Country, Cross Country Touring, Cross Country 8-ball, Cross Country Touring 15th Anniversary, and Hardball motorcycles. The recall addresses a defect where the backrest can fail if a luggage rack (part numbers 2877950 or 2877950-266) is or has been attached to it due to the additional load.

If the passenger backrest fails while the motorcycle is in motion, it may increase the risk of a crash. The recall covers registered owners of 2010 through 2013 Victory Cross Roads, Cross Country, Cross Country Tour, and Hard Ball motorcycles who have or have had the affected passenger backrest and luggage rack combination installed.

Polaris will notify owners, and dealers will mail a recall notice to affected registered owners. The backrest and luggage rack will be replaced free of charge. Polaris mailed an interim letter in September 2013 and a follow-up notification in Spring 2014 when parts became available. The recall began on May 21, 2014. Owners may contact Polaris at 1-888-704-5290 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
