Mack Trucks Recall 2012 Models for Windshield Wiper Linkage Defect

Mack Trucks is recalling certain 2012 Granite and Pinnacle trucks because windshield wiper linkage hardware may not be sufficiently torqued, potentially causing wipers to stop functioning.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where reduced visibility increases the risk of a crash, but no injuries or fatalities have been reported in the source text.

Plain-English summary

Mack Trucks, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012 Granite (GU), Pinnacle (CHU), and Pinnacle (CXU) vehicles manufactured between October 10, 2011, and November 17, 2011. The recall involves a defect in the hardware used to secure the windshield wiper linkage to the wiper motor, which may not be sufficiently torqued.

If the hardware is not properly torqued, the windshield wiper linkage may detach from the wiper motor, causing the windshield wipers to stop functioning. Under certain driving conditions, this loss of wiper function reduces the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Mack will notify owners and replace the affected hardware on affected vehicles free of charge. The safety recall began on August 22, 2012. Owners may contact Mack Trucks at 1-800-866-1177 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
