Mack Trucks Recall 2011-2012 Models Due to Brake Component Defect

Mack Trucks is recalling certain 2011-2012 models because defective brake slack adjusters may crack, causing loss of braking and potential crashes.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the braking system that could cause loss of braking and result in a vehicle crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Mack Trucks, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Pinnacle (CHU), Pinnacle (CXU), LEU, Granite (GU), and MRU trucks manufactured between October 15, 2010, and January 31, 2011. These vehicles are equipped with Gunite automatic slack adjusters that may have inadequate structural integrity due to incomplete knitting of the iron during casting.

The defect could cause the slack adjuster housing to break at the handle under normal operating loads. This failure could result in a loss of braking, which increases the risk of a vehicle crash. The safety recall began on August 24, 2011.

Mack Trucks will notify owners, and dealers will replace the subject slack adjusters free of charge. Owners may contact Mack Trucks at 1-800-528-6586 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
