Mack Trucks Recalls 2012-2016 Models for Driveshaft Cap Nut Defect

Mack Trucks is recalling 33,981 model year 2012-2016 trucks because a cap nut may loosen, causing the driveshaft to disconnect and increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (driveshaft disconnection) that increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Mack Trucks, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012-2016 Granite, Pinnacle, TerraPro, Titan, and LR trucks manufactured between September 1, 2011, and September 8, 2015. The recall involves 33,981 vehicles where the cap nut that retains the interaxle driveshaft yoke to the rear axle input shaft may loosen.

If the cap nut loosens and falls off, the yoke can separate from the axle input shaft, allowing the drive shaft to disconnect. This defect increases the risk of a crash.

Mack will notify owners, and dealers will replace the cap nut and inspect the input shaft threads for damage. Any damaged input shaft will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on June 7, 2016, following an interim notice sent on April 25, 2016. Owners may contact Mack customer service at 1-610-709-2131 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
