Navistar Recalls International Trucks and Buses for Brake Valve Defect

Navistar is recalling certain 2011-2013 International trucks and IC Buses because Bendix relay valves may leak in cold weather, causing continuous brake application and fire risk.

Plain-English summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2011 through 2013 International trucks and model year 2012 through 2013 IC Bus vehicles. The affected vehicles were manufactured between December 2, 2010, and January 26, 2012, and are equipped with Bendix ATR-6 traction relay valves. The recall covers multiple International models, including the Durastar, Paystar, Workstar, Transtar, Lonestar, Prostar, 9200, 9800, 9400, and 9900, as well as the IC Bus CE-C and ICCB models.

In extremely cold conditions, the Bendix relay valves may develop internal leakage. This leakage can cause air pressure to be delivered to the primary or secondary brakes, resulting in continuous brake application. This unexpected brake application can cause the brakes to overheat and lead to a fire. Additionally, it can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. The brakes may also apply without illuminating the brake lights, failing to warn other drivers.

Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will provide a temporary repair until Bendix develops a permanent remedy. This service will be performed free of charge.
