PACCAR Recalls TRP Aluminum Wheels for Insufficient Rim Marking Depth
PACCAR is recalling specific TRP aluminum wheels because rim markings are etched too shallowly, failing federal safety standards and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle component (wheels) with a risk of performance failure leading to a crash, but the source text does not report any specific injuries or fatalities, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
PACCAR Incorporated is recalling certain TRP branded aluminum wheels sold for resale in the aftermarket. The affected wheels have part numbers AW2258B, AW2258M, AW2458B, or AW2458M. The recall involves 8,060 units.
The defect is that the rim markings on these wheels were etched to a depth less than the minimum requirements. Consequently, the wheels fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 120, "Tire Selection and Rims for Motor Vehicles Other Than Passenger Cars."
Without proper rim markings, owners may not be able to identify affected wheels in the event of a future wheel recall. Defective or noncompliant wheels that are not remedied are at an increased risk of performance failure, which increases the risk of a crash or other safety hazard to motorists.
PACCAR will notify owners and replace the rims free of charge. The safety recall began on February 8, 2013. Owners may contact PACCAR at 1-425-468-7400 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
