General Motors is recalling certain model year 2012 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles manufactured between July 18, 2011, and September 6, 2011. The recall addresses a defect in the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that fails to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 138.

The TPMS is designed to illuminate a warning light when tire pressure drops 25% below the recommended cold tire pressure. On the affected vehicles, the light will not illuminate until the tire pressure is more than 25% below the recommended level. This delay in warning can lead to underinflated tires, which may cause tire overloading, overheating, and potential blowouts, increasing the risk of a crash and serious injury. Underinflated tires can also result in premature wear, poor handling, and reduced fuel economy.
