Micro Bird Recalls School Buses Due to Missing Stop Arm Alarm
Micro Bird is recalling certain Girardin and Micro Bird school buses because the 4-way warning lights lack an alarm to alert drivers if the stop arm fails to deploy.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (school bus safety device) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for theoretical risk without confirmed incidents.
Plain-English summary
Micro Bird, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2006 through 2010 Girardin G5 and MB II, and model year 2010 and 2011 Micro Bird G5 and MB II school buses. These vehicles were manufactured from January 2006 through April 5, 2011. The recall affects 109 vehicles.
The recalled buses fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 131, "School Bus Pedestrian Safety Devices." Specifically, the 4-way warning lights do not have an alarm to alert the driver that the stop arm did not deploy when the 4 red lights are activated. This condition could lead a driver to erroneously believe the stop arm is deployed, increasing the risk of injury to pedestrians.
Micro Bird will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected warning lights with units that include an alarm, free of charge. The safety recall began in June 2011. Owners may contact Micro Bird at 1-819-477-2012 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
