Micro Bird is recalling 143 Girardin and Micro Bird G5 school buses from 2006-2011 because a wiring harness may rub against metal, causing insulation damage and potential fire.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (wiring harness rubbing against metal) that poses a risk of fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating involving significant injury or property-damage reports or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Micro Bird, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Girardin G5 and 2009-2011 Micro Bird G5 school buses built on Ford cutaway chassis. The recall covers vehicles manufactured between February 2006 and May 30, 2011. A total of 143 vehicles are affected by this safety campaign.
The defect involves the OEM cutaway wiring harness, which passes just rearward of the driver seat between the B pillar and the raised floor. The raised floor traps the wire harness, causing the wires to rub against the metal floor molding. This friction damages the wire insulation, which may cause an electrical short that can lead to a fire.
Micro Bird will notify owners, and dealers will repair the buses free of charge. The safety recall began on July 5, 2011. Owners may contact Micro Bird at 1-819-477-2012 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
