Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2009 and 2010 Lexus LS460, LS460L, LS600H, and LS600HL vehicles manufactured between August 20, 2009, and May 13, 2010. The recall involves approximately 3,800 vehicles.
A programming change in the steering control ECU for the Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) system can cause improper activation of the steering system protection logic. This may cause the steering wheel to become off-centered by up to 90 degrees if the driver fully turns the wheel in one direction and then quickly attempts to turn it back to the center. If this occurs while driving, the risk of a crash is increased.
Toyota will notify owners, and Lexus dealers will replace the steering control ECU free of charge. The safety recall began on July 12, 2010. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
