Toyota Recalls 2004-2007 Highlanders and Lexus RX Models for Pedal Interference
Toyota is recalling approximately 769,379 vehicles because a floor carpet cover may interfere with the accelerator pedal, potentially causing it to stick.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the accelerator pedal may become stuck, leading to unintended sustained speeds and an increased risk of vehicle crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury risk.
Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 Toyota Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, and model year 2004-2007 Lexus RX330, RX350, and RX400H vehicles. The recall affects approximately 769,379 units. The defect involves the forward retention clip used to secure the floor carpet cover located in front of the center console. If this clip is not installed properly, the cover may lean toward the accelerator pedal and interfere with the accelerator pedal arm.
If this interference occurs, the accelerator pedal may temporarily become stuck in a partially depressed position rather than returning to the idle position. A stuck accelerator pedal may result in unintended and sustained vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Dealers will replace the floor carpet cover with a newly designed one free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during March 2011. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
