What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the accelerator pedal that can become stuck, explicitly increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural vehicle defects.
Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor North America, Inc. is recalling approximately 2,230,661 vehicles due to a defect in the accelerator pedal sensor assembly. The affected models include the 2005-2010 Avalon, 2007-2010 Camry, 2009-2010 Corolla, Corolla Matrix, and RAV4, 2010 Highlander, 2008-2010 Sequoia, and 2007-2010 Tundra.
The defect involves the friction lever inside the pedal assembly, which may become smooth during operation. If condensation forms on the surface, such as when the heater is used without air conditioning on a cold day, friction may increase. This can cause the accelerator pedal to become harder to depress, slower to return to idle, or, in the worst case, mechanically stuck in a partially depressed position, which increases the risk of a crash.
Dealers will install a reinforcement bar in the accelerator pedal to ensure smooth operation. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety recall was expected to begin on February 5, 2010, and be completed by March 15, 2010. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
