Plain-English summary

Lakewood Engineering & Manufacturing Co. is recalling approximately 23,000 low-profile, oil-filled electric heaters in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The heaters were sold at home supply stores, such as Service Merchandise, and through catalogs from August 1998 through March 1999 for approximately $50.

The recall was issued because the electric heating element inside the heater could come into contact with the metal frame over time. This condition poses an electrical shock and electrocution hazard to consumers. Lakewood discovered the hazard through the examination of returned heaters and testing. The company is not aware of any reports of electrical shock or injuries involving these heaters.

Consumers can identify the affected heaters by looking for model number "7400" metal stamped with the Underwriters Laboratories certification on the rear side. The heaters are white, about 10 inches high and 36 inches long, and feature the word "Lakewood" written above the power control. Consumers should immediately stop using these recalled heaters, unplug them before examining them, and then disable and discard them. Because the firm is out of business, a remedy is no longer available.
