Plain-English summary
Lakewood Engineering and Mfg. Co. is recalling approximately 70,000 Model 5101 oil-filled electric radiator heaters. The recall is due to a defect where welds can rupture, expelling hot oil that can burn nearby consumers. The recalled heaters are portable, grayish-white units with six fins and a control panel on one fin. The name "Lakewood" is printed below the handle indentation on the control panel, and the model number "5101" is printed on the UL label on the lower right side of the control panel.
The heaters were sold nationwide, including at Wal-Mart and Ace Hardware, from August 2004 through November 13, 2004, for between $34 and $40. Lakewood is aware of 28 reports of incidents, including one burn injury from spewing oil. An additional 14 heaters with ruptured welds have been returned to the company.
Consumers should immediately stop using these heaters, unplug them, disable them, and discard them. Because the firm is out of business, a remedy is no longer available. Consumers with questions should call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772 (TTY 301-595-7054).
