Service Merchandise is voluntarily recalling 49,000 Hi-Back "Kidde Kare" Infant Walkers, Model 106 FLP, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. These walkers were purchased in Service Merchandise stores in 1984 and 1985. The affected models feature white vinyl binding tape on the edges of the crotch strap.
The recall is due to a hazard where the seat strap can slip through the buckle that secures the front of the walker's seat to its deck. This slippage could result in infant entrapment or injury. The Commission and Service Merchandise are aware of at least five incidents involving seat strap slippage, one of which was associated with an infant death.
Consumers should stop using the walker immediately. Service Merchandise is offering a free replacement seat at no charge. To obtain the replacement, consumers can call toll-free 1-800-251-1389, or Tennessee residents can call 1-800-251-1212. The model number is located on the ID tag on the seat.
