The recalled toys are made of multi-colored plastic and feature a handle with large colored beads and a whistle on the tip, connected to a ring holding a rotating segmented ball. The rattle handles' shape presents a serious choking hazard to infants and young children, as they could block a child's airway if inserted in the throat.
The rattles were sold at discount dollar stores nationwide from December 1997 through May 1998 for about $1. CPSC and STK International are not aware of any injuries involving this product. The recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. CPSC identified the issue through testing samples as part of a joint CPSC/U.S. Customs Service import surveillance program.
