Plain-English summary
K Mart Corporation is voluntarily recalling an estimated 81,000 "Baby's First Squeeze Toys" and 75,000 "Baby's First Playball" squeeze toys. These products were sold for less than $1.00 at K Mart stores since November 1987. The squeeze toys come in telephone receiver, barbell, dumbbell, baseball, basketball, and soccer ball shapes.
Additionally, K Mart is recalling an estimated 33,000 plastic "Telephone Receiver Rattles" sold for less than $2.00 since December 1987. The squeakers in the squeeze toys may come out, and the rattles may break to produce plastic pieces and beads. These detached parts present a potential choking hazard to children under three years of age and may cut infants.
Consumers should immediately take these toys away from infants and return them to any K Mart store for a full refund of the purchase price. The recall was initiated after the U.S. Customs Service and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission identified the products during a joint surveillance program at the ports of Charleston, Dallas, and Savannah.
