Century Fold-N-Go Playards Recalled Due to Collapse Risk
Century is recalling about 212,000 Fold-N-Go playards because top rails may collapse and trap a child at the neck. Consumers should stop using the product and request a free repair kit.
What this means for you
Highest-severity recall. Risk of serious injury or death is documented or strongly suspected. Stop using the product now and follow the agency's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that an 18-month-old boy died when a Century playard collapsed. Per the rubric, if reported deaths exist anywhere in the source text, the score is 5 regardless of other factors.
Plain-English summary
Century Products Company is voluntarily recalling approximately 212,000 Century Fold-N-Go Model 10-710 and 10-810 Travel Playards (playpens) in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The top rails on these playards may collapse unexpectedly, creating a "V" shape that can trap a child at the neck. The recall follows a recent death of an 18-month-old boy in Centreville, Virginia, when a Century playard collapsed.
The Model 10-710 was sold in Toys R Us stores beginning in June 1994 for about $50. The Model 10-810 was sold nationwide beginning in February 1993 in juvenile products and discount stores for about $80. Both models fold compactly and fit into a nylon case. The model number is located on a label on the floor or on one of the support tubes under the floor. Other Century Fold-N-Go models with different top rails are not part of this recall.
Consumers with either the Model 10-710 or Model 10-810 should stop using the product immediately. They should call Graco, which now owns the "Century" brand name, at 800-345-4109 to obtain a free repair kit and installation instructions. The kit includes new Posi-Locks top rails to prevent collapse and can be installed at home using a Phillips head screwdriver. Consumers should not use the playard until the new top rails are installed.
