Baby Trend Home and Roam Playpens Recalled Due to Strangulation Risk

The playpens may appear to be set up properly even if the top rails are not securely locked. If the pivoting hinges are not rotated a full 180 degrees, the top rails can collapse. If an infant is holding onto a top rail when it collapses, the child may be caught by the neck and strangle. There have been four reports of the products collapsing with infants inside, including one incident that resulted in the death of a one-year-old child and two incidents where children were found not breathing but were revived.

Approximately 65,000 playpens were sold nationwide during 1992 and 1993, with some additional units sold under the Baby Express label. Consumers should check to make sure each of the four top rail hinges is fully engaged before each use. Owners should call Baby Trend at 1-800-328-7363 to receive a remedy and a free gift valued at $5.00.
