Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and O'Neill Sportswear, a division of La Jolla Sports USA, are recalling 347 "Milky Way" jackets. These hooded, reverse fleece pullover jackets violate the federal Flammable Fabrics Act because the material burns faster than newspaper, creating a serious risk of burn injuries. The jackets were sold in three colors: Black, Moondust, and Organic Green, and feature "O'Neill" embroidery on the chest with specific sewn-in labels and hang tags.
The jackets were sold at ski and sports shops in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, and Wisconsin from August to November 1995 for approximately $56. The Canadian Government alerted CPSC to the hazard after the jackets' material failed Canadian flammability standards. CPSC and O'Neill are not aware of any injuries involving these jackets, and the recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury.
Consumers should stop wearing these jackets immediately and call O'Neill Sportswear at (800) 213-6444 to arrange for a refund or replacement.
